Elections 2015: Is Buhari's Team Worth Trusting?

Muhammadu Buhari and Goodluck Jonathan are under a spotlight as main contenders in the presidential election. However guest author Biyi Manuel Adeyemi says not enough attention is being paid to those who surround them. Can Nigerians trust people who make Buhari’s team?
The problem with history is that it always repeats itself, either evidently or in a latent form. Remember howGoodluck Jonathanwas the name spoken in every household in 2011? Remember how everyone thought of a gentle, docile minority race? This, coupled with the fact that the country could produce the first PhD holder as a president, was overwhelming. The animation, however, was short-lived. The name that was once sweet is now insipid. The voices that once echoed hosanna to the son of Jonathan now shout“crucify him”. The light of the PDP, which shone brighter in 2011, is now dimmed by the coalition of a formidable opponents that are threatening its very existence.
As a current changes with time, so do the actors in a play. Nigerians are now forced to go back to the stone which they had rejected four years ago; hence, the need for a change. Before General Muhammad Buhari had decided to soar on the wings of the APC, he was like an eagle with clipped wings. Guess it’s true that if you give a man the right tool he will excel. The name GMB is now so popular that our posterity will tell of his tale. An “old soul” is now a child of wonder when it comes to nation-building. Isn’t it a little ironic that, as President Jonathan’s fame is going down, that of GMB is gliding high? Every merchant now trades with the “Buhari currency” as the politics of propaganda thickens without any issue-based campaign.
We are people of hope and rooted faith. And that’s the only thing that still holds the moral fabric of our society together. The belief that someday, come rain or sunshine, people will have a reason to smile. With this as a pivot, the dancing steps of our country people change with time. The same hope Nigerians anchored in 2011 when they elected President Jonathan for a better life, security, roof over head, food in the stomach to get us going, equality of race, better jobs, steady electricity, strong economy, among other reasons. This hope has been tested in various ways, ranging from dwindling economy to instability. Nigerians journeyed through moments when clouds have darkened the sky. New cries for liberation now emerge, as the wind of change blows to rid us of the old world.
There is a need to associate oneself with men of integrity and good quality if one esteems their own reputation. It is better to be alone than in a bad company. It’s quite lucid that the present administration lacks this quality. But what becomes of a house built on straws? Those who pilot the affairs of the ‘change’-seeking administration are the bad eggs that led to the fall of the house of cards built by the present administration. In General Buhari we trust (as we once trusted President Jonathan), but those surrounding him I question.
As the general has decided to swim with the political sharks, won’t he be devoured as President Jonathan was? Will the name which is currently gaining momentum not be dragged in the mud if he is elected president? Will the tune of the Nigerians current song remain the same, or change once their faith is tested again? Won’t history repeat itself as the man with the untainted record is now being confronted with the worst allegations of our time?
